Un-Niched Parenting

Parenting articles with a twist

What I set out to do when I published “Un-Niching Myself” one month ago was to define, as specifically as I can, the kinds of stories I’d like to experiment with.

Prior to that, in my one year of writing on this platform, I found myself writing more about parenting than any other niche. The publication Family Matters (formerly Home Sweet Home) provided a home for these articles, which carried me through my first year of learning the ropes and discovering myself as a writer away from my usual academic self. I teach literature and writing at a university, but I recently turned to writing to explore aspects of myself that I’d been neglecting. Just today, I filed a leave from teaching. In the meantime, I want to make it up to my children, and to that neglected but crucial part of myself — my writer self.

When I wrote “Un-Niching Myself” and opened my third self-pub Un-Niched, I set down in specific terms what I meant by “un-niching,” but I haven’t yet specified the character of the un-niched pieces I will write. I wanted to leave that open for self-discovery to keep myself excited.
